What is HSCSD (High-Speed Circuit Switched Data)?
HSCSD is a data bearer service available over the MTN Network. It is similar to the existing data service except that it offers far higher data speeds. Typically one can browse at three times the existing speed, and this will increase by a further 50% within the next few months.

When is it available?
HSCSD has been offered commercially from October 2000.

What devices can support HSCSD?
HSCSD-enabled devices are required.

The following devices are available now:

The following devices are advertised by suppliers as being HSCSD-enabled when they become commercially available.
  • Ericsson T36
  • Ericsson 520
How does HSCSD differ from other data bearers that MTN offers.
HSCSD differs from CSD (the basic data bearer) in that it allows faster data rates and has a different tariff structure. HSCSD is faster than CSD. It is charged at the same rates as MTN’s voice tariffs for the particular package a subscriber is on.

HSCSD differs from GPRS (General Packet Radio Services) in the following respects:

  • HSCSD has a better average throughput rate than GPRS, making it better suited to applications such as real-time camera surveillance, large file downloads, e-mail downloads, streaming audio and video and targeted browsing.
  • HSCSD is charged per-minute, whereas GPRS will be charged based on usage.
  • HSCSD is implemented now, whereas GPRS is planned for the future.
Where can I sign up for HSCSD?
MTN approved Service Providers are able to activate HSCSD.

Can I use CSD and HSCSD on the same MTN subscription?
Yes and No! An HSCSD user can restrict the data speed to CSD rates (9600 or 14400 bps). However, all users who are HSCSD-enabled are charged at HSCSD tariffs, regardless of whether they access information at the CSD data speeds, or the faster HSCSD data speeds. Access to WAP sites are therefore normally charged at the HSCSD rates, unless the specific WAP site attracts a specific access rate.

How do I select the best tariff plan for HSCSD?
Since the same subscription is used for voice and data, it is best to determine combined voice and data minutes for this calculation. A calculator for working this out is offered on the main MTN Website (http://www.mtn.co.za).

This example is for illustration only: For data only usage, a businessperson wishing to have primary access during the day, averaging about 120 minutes per month, is advised to take out a Performer Contract which includes 120 bundled minutes. A home user wishing to access the Internet largely off-peak is advised to consider an Any-time off-peak Contract which includes 120 off-peak bundled minutes. Please note that these two examples are only guidelines. It is recommended that an MTN-approved Service Provider be consulted. What is the Nokia Card Phone 2.0?
This Card Phone is a PCMCIA device which can be slotted into the PCMCIA type I or III slots in a typical modern notebook (‘laptop’) computer. It comes with a CD-Rom which contains the appropriate software. The Card Phone 2.0 works in a Windows 95/98/2000/NT 4 operating system environment.

If possible, customers should download the latest version of the driver software from the Internet. See http://www.forum.nokia.com

What is the Nokia 6210 Handset
The 6210 is a handset which was available to MTN subscribers since early October 2000. It supports WAP and HSCSD.

The 6210 comes with software on a CD-Rom, needed to run HSCSD on a Windows 95/98/2000/NT 4 operating system environment.

The 6210 has a built-in modem. This modem is similar to the 7110 (which also had a built in modem) but unlike the 6110 (which needs special modem-emulation software to run).

The device can talk to a notebook computer or PDA via an infra-red port.

There is an optional cable accessory which can connect the 6210 to a serial device. This is recommended for frequent users, as it provides a more reliable connection than the infra red connection.

What other networks can support HSCSD?
At present, about 30 network can support HSCSD internationally. Some networks are unable to support HSCSD because they use infrastructure from vendors who cannot yet implement HSCSD. This situation may change in future.

Can I use HSCSD when I am roaming to other Countries or when I am roaming from another Country?
It is not possible for roamers from MTN to use HSCSD on other networks internationally. Similarly, other network subscribers will not be able to use HSCSD on MTN. They will only be able to access data at speeds of 9600 bps. MTN hopes this restriction will be removed in future. But there is no guarantee this will happen.
