HOW TO...
Free up my hard drive?
Posted Wed, 04 Jun 2003

Question:

Hi.
I'm trying to format a removable hard drive and it says 'Does not have enough memory'. How do I check to see how much memory I have and how do I remove some programmes from my computer?

Answer:

Find the amount of RAM or memory, by right clicking My Computer>properties, it should tell you down at the end of the grey window.

However, if you mean hard drive space (which is often confused with memory) you can find it by right clicking My Computer>Open, right click drive C:>Properties. This opens a pie chart with your used and free space showing.

There are a number of ways to free up your hard drive space:
Empty Recycle Bin after making sure it's stuff to throw out....

Some programmes do not appear in Add/Remove programmes, so they might have the uninstaller inside. From the Start button, go through the list, those that have the feature will have a menu item "Uninstall XYX program".

Follow this: Start>Programs>Accessories>System Tools>Disk Cleanup for Disk C: put check in Temporary Internet Files and delete them all. TEMP files> you can also put a check in there and get rid of them.

If you open Internet Explorer, you see the same options to get rid of Temp Internet Files under Tools>Internet Options, plus the marvellous Cookies riddance tool (but make sure you have a record of all your passwords first).

You will probably need to Scandisk and Defrag afterwards.
