This is a transcript from The Computer Show, presented by Malcolm Russell on 702 Talk Radio and 567MW Cape Talk.
05 January 2002
Malcolm: Aki, we need to look at what ideally would happen if everything turned out perfectly for the year 2002 insofar as IT and technology is concerned. First of all we'd want to see the NASDAQ up and it is going up at last, I'm delighted to say.
Aki: Yes it is and it's nice to see that reflecting on the South African shares as well with Didata and Datatec.
Malcolm: It's just as well. Have you seen that awesome campus that Didata is putting up? It's absolutely extraordinary - I mean it's huge. What are they going to do with it and how many people are they going to train in there?
Harry: That's not only for training, that's their new corporate head office. I think that was built and planned in the days when there was no tomorrow.
Malcolm: Yes.
Harry: And suddenly tomorrow is here.
Malcolm: All right. Let's talk games, Aki. What have you got for us?
Aki: Look, it's going to be an interesting year for South Africa but the only problem I have is that I think with the way the rand/dollar exchange rate is going at the moment, I think that it is going to have a negative impact on what we will see in this country and what comes into this country. I hope that many of the distributors get their problems sorted out because this December we hardly had any games out. The big one that went under was Workgroup and their subsidiaries and they had some of the big, big titles. And as a result we didn't see any of those things on our shelves, which is quite sad and I think that the rand/dollar exchange rate is also going to impact on the price of the games that we get into this country. This certainly can put it out of reach of many people. But I know that some of the guys like Electronic Arts, for example, that do a lot of their printing locally have managed to keep the prices down and have brought out a whole range of their classic games, coming in at the R200 mark, which is really good. They're stimulating the market and keeping the market going. And one of the games that they sent me is the Sims Hot Date expansion pack.
Malcolm: Oh I'll say.
Aki: What it does is it gets your Sims dating so if you've never been in love and you're interested in knowing about the skills of dating, this is the one to get. There are a whole new load of characters that come up and they've all got different interests. There are different restaurants, shops, parks, coffee shops and basically they get the Sims in touch with the singles scene. You play matchmaker, matchmaker and you can really teach these guys the moves.
Malcolm: I'm looking at some of these screen shots and it's really quite interesting. You have a picture here of couples standing around in a bar environment and you can choose from: "entertain, buy drinks, check out, chat up, ask about sign, buy drink for, primp or kiss". Does it get any more exotic than that?
Aki: Yes it gets interesting. If you do the wrong things you get your face smacked and you get your drink thrown all over you. It's a brilliant game and it's so different. It's one of those games where you just sit back, think and do the logical thing. You start dating a girl, you go next door and ask her out for a date, you take her to the movies and you don't kiss her the first time. Then you take her to the beach and so the relationship builds up and eventually...
Malcolm: You end up pregnant!
Aki: Yes. They've got strange names like Mr Medallion and some of the new objects are things like a picnic basket, a cuddle couch and a love tub.
Malcolm: It sounds like Big Brother.
Aki: It's amazing. I love the footsy-footsy part when you're sitting in a restaurant and you can play with her feet under the table. You've just got to be careful what you do but it's good fun. If you enjoy the Sims you'll enjoy the Hot Date expansion pack. It is in the stores now and it came out during the month of December. Build up some chemistry, fall in love and do the rest of the things that the Sims do.
Malcolm: Well clearly you don't get to the really naughty bits - I suppose it stops somewhere?
Harry: No you then get the patch through to the ones with porn online and you can take it from there!
