3Com recently unveiled three new Palm computing products, each of which would be targeted at specific market segments. The devices are the Palm IIIe, Palm Vx and the Palm IIIc.

Palm IIIe
The Palm IIIe is considered an entry-level offering and has the striking feature of a clear casing. The device has all the functionality of other Palm devices - ease of use simplicity and one touch synchronism with a PC or Mac computer. The Palm IIIe has 2 MB of memory enabling it to store around 6000 addresses, five years' worth of appointments, 1500 "To Do" items and memos, and 200 email messages.

The Palm IIIe features the Palm 3.1 OS and ships with the Palm Desktop software. For quick electronic business card exchange, the device has an infrared port for "beaming" information between like devices. The Palm IIIe uses two AAA batteries as its power source.

In keeping with its youthful appeal, the Palm IIIe comes with an array of accessories such as the PalmGlove, a neoprene case designed by Californian company BodyGlove, more famous for wetsuits than cases for electronic devices. The best aspect of the PalmGlove case is that it is amazingly shock absorbent. If you are a clumsy oaf always dropping your electronic toys then this could be the answer to those hefty repair bills.

PalmVx
The Palm Vx has until recently only been available in the US. This addition to the slimline PalmV family boasts extra features such as 8 MB of RAM, making it the ideal tool for those power users who do a lot of number crunching with data intense applications.

Palm Vx is one of the first to feature the Palm OS 3.5 and is set to offer users many new features such as "Agenda View", which allows for the simultaneous viewing of the appointments and "ToDo" list on the same screen. Other enhanced features include quick access to menu views simply by tapping the top of the screen, with command stroke options at the bottom of each screen. For the security conscious, or those with something to hide, there is the ability to mask entries and password protect them without hiding the records. Faster synchronisation is possible by means of the HotSynch or the infrared port.

Accessories for the new Palm Vx include an ultra portable collapsible full-sized keyboard for those who want to make data entry even easier. The Palm Portable keyboard allows all Palm users to compose emails, draft documents or take notes. When folded, the QWERTY keyboard measures 9.1cm X 13cm X 2cm and weighs 230g.

The keyboard has hot keys for one-touch access to core applications such as the Address Book, Datebook, MemoPad and To Do list with programmable short cuts for all the functions. The keyboards are expected to retail at around R3 299.
